Very seldom does someone first say "OMG I'd love to date you". If they do....run. Usually a flirt starts with small talk..."what's ur name"? "Do you live around here"? "What do you do"?
If that goes well....and the guy wants to flirt there is a very distinct change of things from casual conversation about nothing to the more specific, like --"do you date anyone"? "Maybe we can hang out sometime"? When the conversation changes from talk of YOU---to talk of maybe WE can......... You have crossed the line from small talk to flirting. You can tell.
