When does one need counselling

Beatbox34 · 31-35, M
Counselling is nothing but burning money for a person who's gonna "listen" and yawn while they provide no fruitful advice whatsoever.

@Beatbox34 Not true for all therapists.
Beatbox34 · 31-35, M
@CoffeeFirst There are people who take their job seriously but not all of them.

@TheCoolestCat My last therapist was horrible. She helped me with nothing. I'm glad though that at least you got a better one who's genuinely helping you.

Every day! We all need it every single day. It's like breathing. It's when you don't get enough in small doses that's when it builds up. What's on your mind?
Paulpp · 36-40, F
@GerOttman What's on my mind... well, just end of a relationship...trying to make my way out
UglySpudicus · 51-55, M
@Paulpp give it time... That's thirty quid please.
GerOttman · 61-69, M
@Paulpp Those are always difficult. Do you have friends and/or family to offer support? Do you feel like you're alone or fear that you may never find happiness?
Paulpp · 36-40, F
OK. Then the important question. How to judge whether a counselor is good or no? My last experience with a counselor was superficial. Don't want this time to end up the same
CoffeeFirst · 56-60, F
@Paulpp I have no solution for that. For me, it has been all trial and error. Our last counselor--we went as a couple--was very good for us. She listened accurately, did not project her own theories on us, had enough education and experience to be helpful. We asked for homework (homework is a very good idea each week!) and she gave us some great things to think about and do. So you need to ask for what you need, too. Listen to what they say: are they trying to fit you into a personality mold, are they asking tough questions or just weak watered down ones. I always read a counselor's background online before I make an appointment, too. For example, I had a bad experience with a MSW so prefer to see an LCPC--they have different training and therapy models... Best wishes.

@CoffeeFirst this was really helpful. Thanks.

If you think you need counseling, you probably do. If you can find a counselor who is a good match, then it helps a lot. Unfortunately, that is trial and error. I know I need counseling right now, haha.

I'm not much of a supporter of it. But I think if one is at their wits end and can not understand or find a solution or come to terms with something.
