Am I doing right?

My ex is in remorse after cheating on me with another girl. He left town and refuse to come back. I was angry with him but I found myself to forgive him. He asked for forgiveness and a second chance. He confessed everything and promised me that he would never do it again. I am in two minds: I love him and I want to take him back but I am not sure if he wouldn't do it again. He too don't expect me to take him back. I continue to support him as a friend for now because everyone including my family hates him for lying to a girl and cheating on me. Maybe I am a fool to do this but I want to help him till he get back to his feet. Although he tells me he wants me, I don't expect an happy ending with him either.
