Romance is important to a relationship or marriage, but it also depends on how you determine "romantic". Romance like candle lit dinners, weekend getaways, a dozen roses and candy, drawing a bubble bath, etc. are nice but they aren't as important and necessary as doing projects together, talking and sharing, laughing and playing, and just enjoying each other's company. Even everyday events and activities can be romantic if you try to see the romance in them. Romance and intimacy can be and are often intertwined.
