Is this rude of him to ask this soon ?

So Im seeing this guy , for two weeks and we were supposed to go on a date yesterday and I cancelled because I got food poisoning and he called me today and I apologized for not being able to hang out and I felt bad because I wanted to see him. As we were talking on the phone he randomly asked me if my last boyfriend was controlling because I said sorry and ask him if we could talk more tomorrow. And I was kinda of confused by this I'm just trying to be nice and think of someone else's feelings. And I haven't dated anyone whose controlling,Then he said so thats what its like to be too nice huh. Am I overthinking this? Or was this rude of him to say ?
