He's a person and is therefore fallible. How you handle the insult and how he then handles what is clearly a big fuck-up will say a lot about who you both are as people.

The only exception for me at least would be he just did a double shift back to back. And back to back days. And forgot what day it was completely. Not just your birthday.

I think it depends on how much importance you attach to things like dates. Holidays. Even anniversaries aren't as important as the fact that you're still together. I called a friend on her 25th anniversary, and congratulated them on a long marriage. She said, is that today? I said yes. And then she asked, are you sure it's been 25 years already?

On a rare occasion it might be okay as long as he makes it up to you, but if it's a constant thing then no it's not okay. It's disrespectful and unacceptable. I remember my wife's birthday, our wedding anniversary, and even the anniversary of the day we start seeing each other and officially became an exclusive couple.
