What are your thoughts/opinions on dating someone you've been friends with for a long time?

Never quite understood the 'never date your friends' thing.
I mean I get that once you change your relationship from 'friend' to 'lover' status you run the risk of possibly losing a friend if the relationship thing doesn't work out.
But you start from a position of trust; admiration and respect so none of that should ever need to be questionable !
