But honestly, space is infinite (which blows my mind), so the idea that we are the only planet with independently thinking life forms would be ridiculous. I always find it funny that our scientists, during exploration, look only for planets that may have the beginnings of life, similar to what happened here on Earth (primordial soup, bacteria, and mold/fungi), rather than for much more advanced life forms, as if humans were the apex life form in the galaxy.

The SETI program, looking for extraterrestrial signals from intelligent life, has been going on for quite a few decades. Before that, there was project Ozma.

No luck, so far.
And if we should detect a signal from the other end of our galaxy, a one-way message would take about 100,000 years at the speed of light or radio waves, so two-way communication would be out of the question, unless Einstein was wrong.
