How to deal with a girlfriend who constantly worries about financial security?

She and I have stable jobs but whenever we talk about our future, she'd address her concern about money. She wants me to save up more and cut down on my traveling expanses. I never ask her for money at all. Sometimes it makes me feel uneasy talking about money all the time. But she would listen and then bring it up again after awhile.

Sounds like a smart woman. Not too early to save for the future!

I would ask her what you can do exactly to help her relax. Maybe show her the ways you have found to cut costs. Put more money aside and show her. This seems to be her stressor. I know it's annoying, but helping her see you are making an effort might help.

@WanderingHelplessly Thanks so much. I appreciate your kind advice.

@Tinkerxbell I hope it helps. As I said, it might be something she has anxiety about. If you show that you are willing to work on it with her. It may help her relax, but make sure you express your feelings too.

Yeah, I'm the same way. When we first were together my wife had a much looser relationship with debt and cash flow and such. Maxing out credit cards and not paying the gas bill can lead to uncomfortable conversations.

Sometimes it's helpful to at least acknowledge your partners concerns and seek practical adjustments at small scale. You know, nothing drastic just an awareness.

any heathy relationship is based on mutual respect so your significant other should respect your boundaries.

how long have you been with her?
Tinkerxbell · 36-40, F

@Tinkerxbell she might be a scammer wanting you to save up money so she can rip you off
Both of you make long and short term financial plans for yourselves and with each other, discuss share and critique each other's plans. Stick to them and say for 1 set hour of each week (Sunday from 5pm-6pm) you can discuss how the plans are going.

Unless you're at a point where you buy the discounted bare necessities because that's all you can afford, then the same discussion needs to happen sooner

Yes, my housemate is the same. She had a very unhappy childhood with real poverty and almost constant abuse. It's then something that's there. I just try to walk around it and reassure her whenever that there's enough in the bank and assurances.

Maybe ask her why she so concern about money? There might be a good reason for it.

What happened in the past? Many times our worries about the future are because of things that happened in the past.
Looks like your life is full of surprises.

Yes, talking about budget & daily expenses, sometimes hectic & buzz off too.

Sigh.

@valobasa4ever Thanks so much. I will. *hugs*

Sounds like you need a second job and stop forcing her to have one

Just be sure this is a genuine concern for your future and not a subtle/well disguised controlling behaviour.
