Are my fiancé and I exceptions to the rule?

We have developed a very interesting, loving and supportive relationship over the last year or so of courtship but some people tell me here that once they got engaged the love life suffered a little bit and their marriages floundered in the first few years, with some opening their relationships out. What were your engagement weeks/months/years like for you two?

We started dating at 15, but she dated other guys in college. That caused a bit of tension in our relationship. We became "pinned" her junior year, meaning she could not date others, and that eased the tension. We became engaged a year later, and those months before our wedding were exciting as we made plans to be together forever. We didn't have sex with each other until our wedding night, which was my call, and it was really hard to resist the urge once we were engaged.

We became best friends in addition to lovers, over the years. Our l=elderly years are a little more difficult though.

Never had a formal engagement -- we met, got married about six months later, been together going on 45 years now.

I think it really depends on the couple and you have to play it by ear. Maybe just see how it goes first. However, communication is key.

Everybody is different
But typically after marriage things change
