Which matters more in a relationship: Love or Respect ?

If love makes you feel wanted and respect makes you feel worthy, which would you choose in a relationship—if you could only have one?”

Hard to choose. I want to say respect, yet, another person's respect should not make us feel worthy or unworthy. We should feel that internally, respect for self. But another treating us with respect is highly important and entangled with the love.

I dont understand questions like this. Why does it matter which is more important? Both are necessary. If there is no love you're just aquaintences. If there is no respect, its chaotic and can easily shatter bonds. Theres a whole plethora of feelings and emotions that are intrinsic and necessary for a healthy relationship.

@JestAJester Over time, many relationships lose the love that once brought them together. Emotions fade, and resentment creeps in. Love is powerful but often hard to sustain. But maybe it’s respect, steadier and stronger that carries people through when love falters. Should respect be the foundation that relationships are built?

@Renkon Wise commentary and quite true in many long term relationships.

@Renkon I dont believe a romantic relationship can last without love. For it to be romantic love must be involved but love cannot be sustained on its own. It requires helpers so to speak such as respect, understanding, patience, loyalty, etc. Hard to say exactly what a foundation should consist of or what percentage each of those words fulfill so to speak. I would say the ratio between love, respect, loyalty, understanding, etc varies from couple to couple. I believe you can still retain respect another being even if they have done you wrong. Say a relationship was broken due to misplaced trust. Say someone cheated. Well it wasn't love that dissipated nor respect although it probably withered somewhat. This time it was trust and loyalty that was broken. I don't think it really matters all that much on which is more important because they're all important. We need a collection of many different emotional facets to maintain a steady and strong foundation.

I hope that answered your question.

Respect, because if it’s not love respect me enough to walk away.

Impossible to chose, both go hand in hand
Renkon · M
@Laura01 But do they actually go hand in hand in most relationships?
Laura01 · 61-69, F
@Renkon Nope, but they should

Respect.

If someone doesn't respect you, there is no way they love you.

Why did you omit the most important option?
Renkon · M
@Miram which is?
