I've never seen a difference between being married and living together, honestly, other than the obvious legal issues. Living together for a long time and splitting up can be just as disruptive and difficult as a divorce.

@DunningKruger Common law marriages in Canada are the same as married when it comes to divorce; I think.

I don't think the stress level is any different, married or unmarried, based on the people I know. Living together is more acceptable these days. One couple told me that it makes it easier for them to manage finances.
