I don’t read as many as you, though I’m never without a book. I read about 30-40 legit books in a typical year. Not counting random browsing through poetry or essays, magazines, etc.

Next up will be Love in the Time of Cholera, highly recommended to me by @SmoKin, who needs to join this group if not already a member!
Jenny1234 · 56-60, M
@Harmonium1923 I read that twenty years ago. It was very good.
PinkStarburst · 56-60, F
@Harmonium1923 That’s a great book.
Harmonium1923 · 56-60, M
@Jenny1234 @PinkStarburst I feel like I’m the last person in our age range to read it. I knew so many friends who read it college or right after.

I’m seriously this close to switching to audiobooks. My eyesight keeps getting worse every day.

My cataracts are getting worse, but the doctors keep telling me, in that snotty tone, “They’re not severe enough for surgery.” Excuse me? I can barely read the dashboard, I get brutal headaches from reading a plain white page, and somehow that’s “not bad enough.” So yeah, audiobooks, here I come.
Jenny1234 · 56-60, M
@HumanEarth I’m sorry to hear this! Do try the audiobooks. They are wonderful
HumanEarth · F
🫂I don’t even know where to begin with them. I’ll start looking tonight after supper. I prefer MP3 formats so I can play them anywhere and not worry about licenses expiring. I’ve heard that’s a big issue with audiobooks, you don’t always own them for life anymore.
No but this year was a good year for books for me. I started of strong. About 10 ish if I'm not mistaken.

I've read 12 so far. I have a goal to read 30. I usually only read on my days off, and I often read longer books, so I'm satisfied if I can read at least 25 (and generally I can).

@Nate931 An excellent accomplishment. Some you've especially found worthwhile this year?
Nate931 · 31-35, M
@Jenny1234 @PinkStarburst @LamontCranston

The best I've read so far:

The Birds by Tarjej Vesaas
Rejection by Tony Tulathimutte
The Garden of the Finzi-Continis by Giorgio Bassani
The Left Hand of Darkness by Usrsula K. LeGuin
Doctor Faustus by Thomas Mann

The Thomas Mann was probably the most worthwhile, but also the most challenging. It took me a few months to read it.

Six I think. I’m about to embark on some Japanese fiction, my favourite port of call, and revisit Ernest Hemingway.
PinkStarburst · 56-60, F
I’ve read 24…that’s a pretty low number for me but it’s been a hellacious year so far.

@Jenny1234 I just finished The Poison Daughter by Sheila Masterson that was really good. Also, The Haar by David Sodergren was amazing.

26 books!? Jesus Christ! Why,? You don't think that's a bit you know..crazy or at least you know , crazy,??

I've read half of one. Well almost half of half of one. The Lord of the Rings. Couldnt keep up with all the names of characters and places. Started to make a list on the margin but eventually I said. . to MORDOR with this.
Goal my goal is not to finish this one and after that, my goal is to not start another .
exexec · 70-79, C
I don't keep count, but I read about 40 books last year, based on purchase records.
Im probably at around 20. That includes novels (Brad Thor, Jack Carr), non fiction, and general textbooks (1 textbook every 2 weeks).

My goal is min 50 for 2026.
Prince0217 · M
@CookieCrumbs Oh! Wow.
Jenny1234 · 56-60, M
@CookieCrumbs what textbooks are you reading?
@Jenny1234
This week, I’m finishing Python for data science. Other textbooks would be about machine learning, computer vision, and AI.
moonlightlullaby · 46-50, F
I used to read like breathing air, but last year and this haven't been stellar. Like zero. I need to change that now that I'm better. Thanks for the inadvertent reminder, Mr Jenny 😌

Good luck on your goal 🤞💖
StygianKohlrabi · 46-50, M
you mean novels? I can't focus enough. Maybe 2-3.
Jenny1234 · 56-60, M
@StygianKohlrabi which have you read?
StygianKohlrabi · 46-50, M
@Jenny1234 The Wager. I'm only 100 pages in. I used to read a book in one night.
I haven’t kept track but I average 2-3 a week. Some are rereads.

@Jenny1234 I reread Endurance, a true account of the Antarctic exploration in 1914-1917 of Ernest Shackleton with his 29 man crew. Before they even started on the planned expedition, their ship got ice-locked and began to sink and they had to evacuate.

No radios. Their only choice for survival was to use their ingenuity, strength and skill to get to help. It took 497 days in the worst weather on the planet, but every man returned alive. A genuinely remarkable story.
SageWanderer · 70-79, M
I’m on my seventh but taking notes as they’re read. Probably more study than reading.
Jenny1234 · 56-60, M
@SageWanderer what have you been reading
SageWanderer · 70-79, M
@Jenny1234 Basically cookbooks and witchcraft, notes are recipes for one or two and uses for crystals, herbs and such.
BrandNewMan · 61-69, M
Ive been using some audio books so I can listen while doing other stuff .. walking, working out, painting walls, driving etc

This year, I am still in my first. I don't know what's wrong with me. I really like the book, but I just don't seem to find the time to read.
Jenny1234 · 56-60, M
@Musicman I’m sorry you haven’t had much time. What is the book ?
