Morning Stoicism

Leave a number from 17-170 and I'll give you a quotation from that page of "Meditations" by Marcus Aurelius, the Roman emperor and Stoic philosopher.

@ChampagneOnIce If you do the job in a principled way, with diligence, energy and patience, if you keep yourself free of distractions, and keep the spirit inside you undamaged, as if you might have to give it back at any moment . . . then your life will be happy.
You don’t agree with the first sixteen pages?

@Mamapolo2016 LOL. Table of contents, intro, etc.

@CookieCrumbs When you face someone's insults, hatred, whatever . . . look at his soul. Get inside him. Look at what sort of person he is. You'll find you don't need to strain to impress him.

The effort to understand others changes our way of dealing with them.

@0uijaFinger We should remember that even Nature's inadvertence has its own charm, its own attractiveness. The way loaves of bread split open on top in the oven; the ridges are just byproducts of the banking, and yet pleasing somehow: they rouse our appetite without our knowing why. Or how ripe figs begin to burst. And olives on the point of falling: the shadow of decay gives them a peculiar beauty.

[I can't believe you picked a page with a reference to figs!]
@Harmonium1923 Olives 🫠

@0uijaFinger Its a brilliant passage actually. Like all these things happen in nature, and they aren’t inherently good or bad. We are the ones who assign those judgments. Is a crack on the top of a bread loaf an aesthetic imperfection or an appetizing glimpse? That’s up to us.

@Poppies If it makes no difference whether you look at the world for this long or that long, then death shouldn't scare you. . . . So make your exit with grace--the same grace shown to you.

(If you choose the last page in the range, you're probably gonna get quotes about death!)

@Ferric67 The best revenge is not to be like that.

@Harmonium1923 people often lose themselves when they focus on revenge

What’s the saying
Dig two graves when in the act of revenge

@GoFish True good fortune is what you make for yourself. Good fortune: good character, good intentions, and good actions.

@justbob We were born to work together like feet, hands and eyes. . . To obstruct each other is unnatural. To feel anger at someone, to turn your back on him: these are obstructions.

@Harmonium1923 Cool. Thank you.

@Tamara68 Nature knows no evil, does none, and causes harm to nothing. It dictates all beginnings and ending.
