One that has stayed with me ever since I read it is "The Pawnbroker", by Edward Lewis Wallant. It was also made into movie. Really powerful.

It's very hard to pick just one. Maybe the book Ecclesiastes in the Bible. Or The Songlines by Bruce Chatwin.
