I Like to Read

Where Have All The Readers Gone?... I am currently 20 years old, and it shocks me to see how few people of my age read. They all prefer watching TV and movies. Then we wonder why young people today struggle to read. They don't get any practice. Schools are supposed to see this problem and do something about it. Not only do the youth of today struggle to read, but they lack creative thought. I used to help my English teacher go through the essays of my class, and it stunned me. My generation is mostly illiterate, yet they pass public school.

I am lucky, in the sense that my mother instilled a love for reading within me at a young age. But what of the rest? We need to get young people to start reading again. It can only benefit them.

I'm 22. Used to hate reading for most of high school, but now I love it. Someone pushed me to read a certain book, and I fell in love with books. That was when I was 18. I still love my movies and tv though. But I agree with you. And they are missing out.

If you used to dislike reading, and learned how to love it at 18, it must mean that you don't have to be taught to like reading from a young age. So, there might be hope yet for all the others. Maybe they can also learn to like reading, if they give it a chance. Its just such a negative mindset that people associate reading with. I remember my classmates used to associate reading with work and homework, thus they'd never give it a proper chance.
