Being a reader and never seeming to have enough light in the house

It sucks!! I've tried book lights, they're cumbersome and I always lose them. I've tried using my phone as a reading light (there's an app for it) but it just drains my battery.

I have a lamp by my bed, but I have to be in a certain position to actually get the light to hit my book pages. The overheard light is too bright but also casts shadow. Natural daylight is good, but bf keeps the blinds closed so the blazing AZ sun doesn't heat up the house. The only comfortably-lit place I am able to read is at work. 😮‍💨

It's cheesy but I admit I've gotten really into doing most everything by candlelight. I light a jar candle and a candlestick and they provide not too much not too little light.

I got my son a flexible goose neck lamp with a clamp ($12 bucks on Amazon) that he can clamp in different places. It has three settings of light, even an amber glow that doesn't strain his eyes.
I see you wear glasses, but imagine loving reading and unsure how to spend your time so often and a book comes to your mind, because it's betters than chasing being alone or online (here). Then you have to study I need the book either six or eight inches away :(

It’s more of an issue for me with age. I need brighter lights. I usually sit near a floor lamp and pull it right over to me. Something that casts a broader range of light works best for me.

I got one of those goose-neck adjustable position lamps by my bedside so I can aim it JUST right to read by.

Remember, most great historical works of literature were written in the time long before homes had any illumination other than candles. All study took place under the same conditions. Most ordinary people have only had bright illumination at night for about 100 years. Very recent in the grand scheme of things.
@FreddieUK I learned about illumination here.

I can't read real books anymore, only ebooks on my tablet.
