What are you reading?

I've just finished this and I'm looking for something new.

Have you read Master and Commander by Patrick O'Brian?

Last mystery I read was Ink Black Heart by Robert Galbraith AKA J.K. Rowling. But that's #6 in the series and you really should start at book 1.

@ElwoodBlues I've quite enjoyed the Strike adaptations on TV. I haven't read any of them, or Master and Commander.
@Lugwho The Strike series on TV does a pretty good job; not much point in reading them when you know the outcomes.

Master and Commander is set in the British navy in the time of the Napoleonic wars. The writing and characters are spectacular, though you'll have to learn about yards & sailing by vs large & broadside weight of metal. But it's worth learning because the whole series is so wonderful.

The author spent years reading thru the Naval Gazette - articles written by captains for other captains to read. For Master and Commander he took pretty much the real events of one real ship, but compressed and altered the timeline and invented and added characters. So the descriptions of chases and battles are very realistic and clear.

Try book 1 and see if you like it; my wife (a big mystery reader) likes them so much she's re-read them multiple times. She says book 4 is her favorite.

@ElwoodBlues Thanks for the tip. I'll look out for that.

I'm 400 pages in on Liu Cixin's "Dark Forest". I finished the "3 Body Problem" just before this. One more book to go after this one, and then the trilogy will be completed. There is also a spin off book, that I might read, since it's short.
I’m on this weird Mt. Everest kick lately. Started out with Jon Krakauer’s “Into Thin Air” and then two others about Everest.

Mitch Albom’s “The Little Liar” is also very good.

I just finished a book 2 days ago so this morning I plan to start this. It’s an audiobook
Lugwho · 61-69, M
@Jenny1234 I'm sure we have some of her books in the house. I don't think I've read any of them.
Jenny1234 · 56-60, F
@Lugwho This will be my second or third book of hers that I’ve read. I wouldn’t say that she’s at the top of my favourite authors list, but I think she has some decent stories
tobynshorty · 51-55, F
I don’t have anything at the moment. I’m looking though. I like mystery and thriller.
Lugwho · 61-69, M
@tobynshorty I enjoy a good mystery and thriller occasionally

Haven't read much in the last couple of months, I just finished Even Cowgirls Get the Blues by Tom Robbins.
helenS · 36-40, F
Thank you – never heard of that author before, and it sounds interesting 🌷
Lugwho · 61-69, M
@helenS It was a very interesting read
nedkelly · 61-69, M
Planning my activities in Osaka Japan, went to Osaka Castle today, and tomorrow off to Universal Studios in Osaka
Lugwho · 61-69, M
@nedkelly Sounds fun
NCCindy · 36-40, F
@nedkelly I highly recommend a side trip to a side trip to Himeji ... about an hour on the slow train, 20 minutes on the Bullet train.

Much nicer castle than the one in Osaka

@Lugwho That's okay
I like movies too... But I do at least watch a lot. I'm kind of a couch potato. And if I'm not behind a PC, TV ... then I'm lieing down with a book. I like all the lazy stuff.
Lugwho · 61-69, M
@Kwek00 I used to love films and got out of the habit. Combination of being married to someone who's not keen and two decades of children choosing the film lol.
Kwek00 · 41-45, M
@Lugwho Well, you can spend a second only once. 🤷‍♂
Since I'm living with someone, my number of movies per week... has gone down drastically.

Twenty years after by Alexandre Dumas
Lugwho · 61-69, M
@Thevy29 I read The Three Musketeers as a teenager. A long time ago 🤣
Thevy29 · 41-45, M
@Lugwho Did you know there is 8 books in the series?

But Hollywood just can't get past those few chapters in book 1...🤦‍♂
Lugwho · 61-69, M
@Thevy29 I didn't, no.
I want to find a book I can get sucked into and ignore the world
Jenny1234 · 56-60, F
@OlderSometimesWiser I loved it and I loved the TV series too. Did you watch it?
@Jenny1234 I did! Loved it but wasn’t a fan of the part four change in actresses. Too unlike the originals, guess because I grew to know, love and root for them. 🙂

Anything Elena Ferrante has been pretty great, read/saw The Lost Daughter and The Lying Life of Adults too.
Jenny1234 · 56-60, F
@OlderSometimesWiser like the change in actresses in part four either. I think that the original actors would’ve been just fine to use. And I loved her other books that you mentioned and it would be really good if they made a movie out of the Days of abandonment

Im too lazy to read anymore besides penguin sold out to terrorist influence
Lugwho · 61-69, M
@MarbleMarvel That's always disappointing. I always try to finish a book once I've started.
@Lugwho yes I'm the same way. I do want to finish this one but also want to get started on something else lol
Lugwho · 61-69, M
@MarbleMarvel Skim reading helps 😀
Lugwho · 61-69, M
@V00doo Kahlo presumably
