@SunshineGirl What do you think of the first one? I’ve never read anything by her but I’ve heard others speak well of her.

@Harmonium1923 It's a sort of feminist version of Jane Austen. Looks at the psychologies of two girls and a woman whose destinies are to be shaped by the will of a patriarchal physician. I'm about a third of the way through and fairly gripped.
Elizabeth Gaskell was once employed to write by Charles Dickens, but he apparently found her impossible to work with!
