What's the best book to read about WWII?

I've been reading about WWII lately and finding it really fascinating. Any books about WWII you'd recommend as good reading? Non-fiction or fiction, just a good read is what I'm looking for.

My favorite WW2 book is "I Was A Doctor At Auschwitz" by a Hungarian-Jewish woman called Gisella Perl. I like survivor stories.

Of course a lot of the stuff she talks about is grim and disgusting, it made me quite emotional so read at your own risk

@Byron8by7 Thank you. My beloved stepfather served in North Africa and won a lot of medals for rescuing soldiers from behind enemy lines (he was a doctor). I will definitely read these, starting with the one about the North Africa campaign.

@greenmountaingal The Liberation Trilogy is especially well researched and very well written. Enjoy.

I would find the taped interviews with World War II veterans very interesting.

@SweetMae I so appreciate the sacrifices of military families. I had friends with dads in the military who had to move away. They had this closeness I admired, though.

@SweetMae My dad was a WWII veteran, and he also served in the China-Burma-India (CBI) theater, in the 10th Air Force. For the last year of the war, he was a ground crew chief in charge of maintaining 12 B-24J heavy bombers at an air strip in India. My dad had many stories about his experiences.

This book is exceptional.

Last real good one was "Agents of Innovation: The General Board and the Design of the Fleet that Defeated the Japanese Navy" . More like pre WW2. The US created floating dry docks and the fleet train to island hop to victory.

I read the book 'Enemy At The Gates' back in the early '90s. Its non-fiction about the Battle of Stalingrad, the great turning point of WWII. It's an epic read.

What subject matter interests you? I’m a WWII student.
