Animals, outside humans, aren't very complicated and don't think in words; they think, (feel), in abstract.
So if you fed me, petted, and cared for me and I were to think in abstract about what I know about you, I would see an image of a pink haired girl with red flowers draping from her chin every time I got hungry, needed something or wanted company.
