Victorian era dead ppl photos are creepy AF ..

Yeah. It seems gruesome to me, too. But I imagine people had different attitudes about death back in the day. My grandmother once told me that losing at least one or two children to flu, typhoid, smallpox was not uncommon.

I inherited a copy of "The Harlem Book of the Dead" by photographer James Van Der Zee (1886-1983). He took lots of photos of people in Harlem society and in our community in general.

This book had final photographs of people all dressed up, in their caskets. One of my great-aunts who had moved to New York in the 1920s appears in the book.

At the time it was considered a great honor to be so remembered.

Yeah, social norms change, I ain't mad at them, it's just creepy nowadays too look at those dead people standing or sitting eyed wide open.
