Why would someone not want what's better for his wife and kids? Why turn your back on the closest people to you? What will you gain except making them resent you.

No one ever has the whole story.
You (apparently) think this guy is turning his back on his wife and kids, when you don't know what he's turning towards.
I know a guy. Never talks to his family. They curse him and say what a horrible son and brother he is. What they forget is that his whole life while growing up, they all treated him like shit. He left at 18 and never went back. Why would he go back to people who treated him poorly just to make them happy?
