I Have Random Thoughts

So why the "C-4" explosives calls "C-4"?
I assume the "C" is short for something but what about the "4" ? Maybe its like "C version 4".
But I haven't herd of C-5 so my theory about the version number is wrong, and we are back to square 1 , what exactly C-4 means?

So basically the Brits invented Composition C, an explosive for WWII. It wasn't very good however so the US changed the formula and made Composition C-2. This was a much more useful plastic explosive but ran into troubles if stored in elevated temperatures. So again they went to the drawing board, changed the formula slightly and made Composition C-3. This was used during the Korean War and it worked great... That was until winter. Turns out it wasn't very good in the cold. So again they tweaked it coming up with Composition C-4. This one handled the cold temperatures that the C-3 didn't. It was so good in fact that they haven't felt the need to improve on it.

There was a C2 and a C3. C4 came into being in 1960. It's less volatile than it's predecessors.
The letter C just relates to the mix it's composed of.
