I Have Random Thoughts

I have conflicting feelings. It's a love/hate relationship with the "bulk" section at one of the grocery stores in my neighborhood. You know the area where there are these big barrels filled with all different kinds of flour, sugar, grains and oats, etc. As a baker I want to love this section. I sometimes feel my heart actually flutter at the thrill of such volume and variety and the idea that I can scoop the exact amount of each spice in to a bag. I find it exciting, which probably makes me a geek but I'm fine with that. But soon the thrill is replaced with concern as the other side of my brain kicks in. The questions begin to fill my mind. How long has it been sitting in the barrel which is not air tight? How many hands have been in that barrel? Wouldn't bugs be drawn to a barrel full of food? What if a weird person is getting their jollies by spitting in the barrels as they walk by? What if a wacko put a harmful substance in the barrel? Well, you get the idea. I really want to love this section of the store but I can't fully commit to a relationship with it. There are just too many red flags running through my mind.
