“Is this the fruits of colonialism and slavery?”
“No madam, this house is from the 16th Century.”
“So is it?”
“No madam, this is a Tudor era house.”
“Why won’t you answer me? Is this luxury from selling slaves?”
The owner just stares at her, reevaluating if she might have special needs.
“Madam the house was built in an era before empire, when England was struggling not become a part of France or Spain. The house and this collection are all Tudor.”
“But did they sell slaves to pay for all of this??”
At that point an Irish member of our group said something quite poetic to the Americans that made them shut up so we could carry on with the tour.
