Do you ever
Think about all the things you have in your life right now? And if you did, would you feel better?
I woke up this morning feeling pretty sad and thinking about all the things I used to have that I no longer do. It seems to me that grief is not just missing the person but it's missing all the things you used to do that can't ever be again.
My husband treated me like a princess. He used to get up and bring me honey on toast and coffee and on holidays and lazy weekends we would sit in bed eating breakfast, reading news articles (or in my case, funny stories about animals) and sharing with each other.
I miss that so much that this morning, thinking about it made me spiral into another one of my depressive moods.
But then this morning I started forcing myself to think about what I do have instead - this bed is really comfortable. It's probably a memory foam mattress and it's so soft.
Today I will spend with my family who are really great, we do not fall out very often. They are unconditionally there for me and they are really funny. My dad especially has this really dark sarcastic sense of humour that you wouldn't understand unless you knew him well.
I'm currently with my family, in one of the most beautiful places in the world. I have a lot to be thankful for too. It just occurred to me that what is key to feeling better is appreciating the small stuff and just taking time out of our day to think about that.
When we do that, the things we don't have or things that cause us to feel fearful, don't seem as big somehow.
