Some compliments aren’t compliments
My best friend and I always hear people tell us we look good for our age. That’s a back handed compliment! ( we really don’t like the phrase for our age !). Sorry so insulting.

Actually, they are telling you that you are a stand-out, looks-wise, in your age bracket.
They noticed that you look especially nice, better than your peers.
That doesn't sound at all awful.
