This is what the NYPD have TO say about the case:

Police consider smiling photo of suspect to be the “money shot” that may help identify him. (Is it really though?! )

Police have obtained video of the suspect entering the Port Authority Bus Station – but not exiting it, indicating he left town.

Authorities believe the suspect may have left New York City on an interstate bus.

Key evidence, including the bike the suspect rode and the gun used in the killing, is still missing.

The backpack was found in a second sweep of the park Friday evening between some boulders just south of the park’s carousel, according to a source

Here's a few pictures from the Starbucks location. Definitely a different jacket.

On UK television news the reporter described the smiling picture by saying, "In a flirtatious moment, the suspect lowers his face covering to smile at someone."
I thought, why would anyone on a murder mission do something dumb like that? It's definitely two different people in the pictures released by the police.

I think it's just camera and photo quality, lighting difference.... But you may be right too 🤷🏻‍♀

I find it very hard to believe that's merely due to lighting differences indeed.

One jacket only zips partially down. It is a pull over.

The other is a proper jacket which zips and buttons all the way down.

The lighting is definitely a factor in color but these differences in clothing are not to be dismissed.
