Interviewer: "so you don't object to us contacting your previous employer just to make sure you're going to fit in here?"

Me: "not not at all, as long as I can speak to your previous employees, so I can know why they left".

This is actually a totally reasonable request that should be honored. Like the employee who left would have to consent to being contacted, but that is even better. Like when you leave, no matter how it happens, they have to ask if you want to be on the contact list.
