My mother was widowed in her mid 50s. She described the aftermath as walking through a veil of tears. Kind of a dull achy fog that just wouldn't lift. Then one day she woke up and the sun was shining and the bees were buzzing and the flowers were blooming and she realized this world is still beautiful and life is still for the living.
