Moving the Indiana Bell central office building, 1930 [I Have Random Thoughts Of Randomness]

In 1930, the Indiana Bell central office building — an 11,000-ton building — was rotated 90 degrees on its lot over the period of a month. Over 600 workers continued to work in the building and there was no interruption of electricity, plumbing or telephone service. The move was the plan of renowned Indiana architect Kurt Vonnegut Sr. — you may have heard of his son, who later made something of a name for himself.
