Every site you visit stores your IP, your time of visit, number of visits. They can search the internet for other sites that have seen this IP, where you went, what you did, timelines. They can even track it to your address and get your home phone number. If you are doing anything illegal, and this is a subjective term since someone else is deciding what is legal and what is not, you can suddenly find yourself with police at your door, and they shoot your dog, take all your computers and your neighbours never look at you the same again.

@SoftIceCream A VPN can be tracked back to the real IP depending on the security and logging of the VPN provider. The VPN provider sees everything the user does and can report that activity along with providing the original IP.
A router preloaded with another IP is likely to be more secure.

@meJess If your VPN is storing logs then I agree. Most claim they do not so what you said would not be possible. If the police ask the VPN provider for information about a particular IP they would have no way to tie it to any actual IP.
Of course if you were actively connected, and they were certain it was you, then this would be possible, assuming the police had a warrant and the ability to connect that quickly.
VPN is not foolproof, but it is many levels better than not having one.
