I think I’d look for this old, beat up stuffed dog I had as a kid.
He was missing one eye, his fur was matted from being washed too many times, and one of his ears barely hung on by a thread my mom sewed back in place over and over and over again. But I took him everywhere. He sat next to me in the car slept with me every night, and “guarded” my bed
When my parents argued, I’d sit in my room and talk to him like he understood it all. I told him my big plans, my fears, the names of the girls I had crushes He was the only one who knew all of it.
I remember the day I realized he was gone. I pretended it didn’t bother me because I was “growing up.” But I think that was the first time I felt something ended.
