How long does it take to let go of the hurtful words someone said about you?

Do you forgive and forget?
Do you let it pass?
Do you act normal after a few days?
How do you do it?
How do you block the feeling of being hurt?

With a new year just days away, do you really just let it go?

Some of the most hurtful degrading words of my life happened right here. They had impact because it was from someone I was connected / close to. They stayed with me for a long while. Not that I was remembering them daily, but they would sometimes come back to my consciousness and I would feel 😓😡 all over again. It fades after a while and you rarely remember them.
I try to forgive not for them, but for my own peace. I don’t always forget, but I try not to let it control my days. I give myself some time to let it pass. Letting go of hurtful words isn’t always easy, and it takes as long as it takes.
Forgiveness feels impossible when the hurt runs so deep. Letting go isn’t as easy as it seems; the pain lingers and often overshadows any hope for moving forward. Acting normal is just a mask I wear to get through each day. With the new year approaching, it’s hard to see anything but the weight of what’s been lost. It feels like there’s no real escape from this darkness.
I may forgive, but i don't forget. Even though I forgive I can choose to not let them continue to bring me down. If they hurt me bad enough i make the choice of not letting them do it again.

@Bexsy i won't let them bring me down. Atleast I'll try not to let them.

I guess I kinda don't let it go because when someone blatantly insults you it's something they're likely to do again. I can stop myself from hurting but I won't forget who hurt me.

About 5 min if it's someone I really care for. It's just words. You work it out. You move on.
FreeorLonely · 51-55, F
I forgive for my peace of mind but I don’t forget and never really trust them again.
GunFinger · F
@FreeorLonely yes. I think I could try to fake it around those people.

One thing I do know is you rapidly run out of strength carrying too much baggage ...

I try to give it all to God and trust that He will deal with it all in a good way..

Things said to me before I was ten years old still affect me. I was an extremely impressionable kid

All depends who said them
Probably forgive but don't forget
I'm Italian, we forgive and file. do it a second time and there's hell to pay
Sometimes forgiven. Rarely forgotten.
GunFinger · F
@OlderSometimesWiser yup. That's true.
You never let go.
There's a little black jar, deep within me. I keep them there, with the lid screwed down tight ... but there they remain.
@NudasPriest ^this. My heart will always know on some level that they think that of me or remember that they said what they said. it's in that little chamber of my heart where i let it stay compartmentalized. One of the many reasons i make a serious point to never say mean things to people when i am upset.. you can't take them back. You can't unring a bell.

Tell them off

Sometimes a lifetime. 😥 A lot depends on what was said and who said it.
