I had a field trip to Portland, Oregon today, and there were so many homeless people there. It kinda made me sad, but there was this one guy in front of Powell's Book Store who was just playing his guitar. His little sign said he was homeless, wanted to raise $18 to buy a new guitar case, and he was really good too so I have him my spare change.

Some people think they're just scams, but I'd like to think he's gonna actually buy that guitar case (his current one was pretty beat up)

I always offer food if I have it. At one point I came across a guy asking for blankets and I gave him a few I was planning on donating to goodwill anyways. Another time I put a box together with staff a roommate left behind and anything I could spare food wise and took it to a park where a lot of homeless live. If I find someone asking for money in the street its a bit harder for me to decide if they deserve it or not. I'd say definitively less than 50/50 of the times
