what's the best way to stop people from using my debit card when I didn't even give it to them?

since June every couple of months someone gets into my debit card when I didn't even give it to them, then my card gets shut down and its annoying when you cant use it, I have one this time cause the last time they sent me one in the mail they sent two and I asked if I could activate the other one and use it if I needed to and they said I could so I have that one right now. the supermarket downstairs in my apt bldg will let me write checks when that happens so that helps, its very annoying cause I have stuff on autopay and then I have to call everyone and change the number again on my card, so how do people do this and how can I stop them? they took a lot of money out of my card this time so the bank stopped my card, its very annoying so how do I put a stop to this?

The banks will tell you that the protections on CCs are better than on debit cards. It's likely one of the things you have on auto pay or an online use of the debit card that compromised your number. If you can get a CC, move auto pay items and online purchases to that card. Use your debit card only for in person purchases. Don't forget to pay off your CC of course.
