Aside from Mr. Gerard, the answer would be that water pooled on a hot earth with various sources of energy. Organic compounds interacted for form the first replicator molecules. Over time these replicators developed into the first basic forms of life on earth, single celled anaerobic bacteria with unbound nuclei. From there life evolved into more complex and diverse forms.
