When I was about 10 years old a friend brought over a road flair one weekend and while we were out in the yard playing he showed it to me. One thing led to another and he dared me to try and lite it.
So we snuck behind our garage (it was a separate structure from the house, and I fumbled around trying to strike it properly to get it burning. Finally, I did, and it scared me, I dropped it and we ran off.
Moments later, unbeknownst to us, the flare set the back wall of the garage on fire. When we saw the smoke, panic ensued, but I was smart enough to run in the house and tell mom.
Long story short, we lost the back part of the garage before the fire department got there and put it out. When Dad got home I lost most of the hide on my backside.
