Why do people put carpets inside kitchens and bathrooms?

Seems like the worst place, easy to get a carpet to stink up because water or even food exposure

Kitchens and bathrooms are the worst places for carpet. Tile or good quality vinyl floors for me. Throw rugs and socks in the winter.
