It's not necessarily a question of being "ashamed". This is basically an anonymous site, hence the usernames, unlike Facebook. But those who deliberately deceive expecting a relationship offline are indeed a sad lot. (Btw, my avi is the actress Lena Horne, who passed away at the age of 92 in 2010.)

I hear ya. I encountered people on EP that relished in catfishing and taking advantage of people's trust. But I guess that's the world we live in now.

My guess is that some are very insecure about themselves, and it's a way for them to get esteem. Or maybe they feel that they aren't good enough for their lovers...? Nonetheless, it's not the right thing to do. If anything, I appreciate a person not being scared to show me their flaws. If everyone was perfect, it would be boring. You'll have to tell them at some point anyways, and it just causes the person to feel betrayed and heartbroken. You could've just told the truth, and spare that.
