Why do people feel the need to respond to "black lives matter" with "all lives matter!"

What aren't you getting here? It's not about exclusion. It's about bringing attention to a particular group that is being mistreated.

There's absolutely nothing wrong with feeling more attachment to people who look like you than to those that don't.
It's natural and if it stops there then there's no real harm done.

But that is SO not the issue here.
This is about discrimination. This is about black people receiving much harsher treatment from the criminal justice system and much worse and frequent violence at the hands of police. It's about social perception and economic oppression.
