Kids aren't stupid ....they feel EVERYTHING that's going on, even if you want to believe you shelter them from it.
It hurts them, it makes them angry and depressed and they can take on guilt that isn't theirs.
All they see is dysfunctional people teaching them dysfunctional ways.
I work at a high school, Ive heard many kids stories of home - they always know EXACTLY what's going on between parents . They see it, they feel it ....and resilient as they are, it hurts them too.

@OogieBoogie ooh i'm not syaing they don't but i'm also talking about a functional family thats split up not a disfunctional mess those don't work!
