"Believe" isn't the word I would choose, but the theory that best fits the existing data is that the universe is fundamentally random at the quantum level. This means there are effects without causes. Not hidden causes waiting to be understood, but true fundamental randomness. I don't like it, but it's the theory that best fits the data.
