I drive my son in the winter to his bus stop that’s 2 blocks away so he can stay warm. Every single time I watch several cars who go also drive there struggle to reverse out of there because it’s a dead end. I’m reversing two blocks on to get home and pulling right into my parallel parking spot.

My dad taught me to drive at around 11-12 years old and he told me if I wanted to learn that I needed to learn how to first drive in reverse as good as I should forward. I have a backup camera now, but I don’t trust it.

@MellyMel22 That is very smart and I remember my grandpa saying something similar about being able to go in reverse as well as forward the same skill level.

@deepblacknothingness I’m glad I learned from him!
I don't get the backup mirrors. They show a straight line exit and the lines are not exact so really not helpful, especially if you are turning while backing up. The only thing they are good at is to quickly check there isn't an animal or person standing behind the car. It is a distraction like a lot of things these days.

Your eyes always face the direction of travel. If you are backing up, you look behind you. You dont stare in the mirrors or watch the TV screen on your dash. The camera is an aid, but you dont use it exclusively to back up.
In a drivers test if you do not look behind you, its an automatic flunk. At least it was when I was 16.

I can see better reversing without my backup camera but it comes in handy sometimes

Technically is definitely moving fast. I can still remember my dad talking about using an outhouse as a kid. Then getting electric and plumbing. Now with technology changing so rapidly now we are like my grandparents. Times are moving so fast these days.

@Musicman My mom told me one of the last times she went to hong kong was in the 80s and they flushed toilets with buckets of water. Now look at them.

@deepblacknothingness I never dreamed in our lifetime things would change this fast.

they have cars that park themselves now
deepblacknothingness · 61-69, M
@YoMomma They have that lane assist to for keeping you inside your lane. If you can't do that or park on your own I don't think you should drive.

@deepblacknothingness some cars can do that now too supposedly lol

I don't think I can drive a car without a backup camera. pedestrians seriously give zero fucks about their well being. even with using mirrors theres always something i pick up on the camera i couldn't see with the mirrors... but no definitely cant replace mirrors with only cameras

@deepblacknothingness right!? it's like: 'bro, PRETEND you live in the big city and stop texting there's 2 ton killing machines zipping around you'
deepblacknothingness · 61-69, M
@tenente I did learn how to drive in a big city thankfully long long ago. One time in a grocery store parking lot this man and these two women were hanging back. I thought they were letting me go so I began to lurch forward only for them to start walking. I hit the brakes to let them pass but the man in the group stopped in front of my car with his chest all puffed up and began shouting at me trying to peacock in front of the women he was with. I said oh forget it and went to another grocery store because I didn't want to run into him inside.
