I saw a gated community for the first time yesterday. Why is it even necessary? It's like a fancy prison

I went with my bestfriend to the fancy area to pick up something he bought online off marketplace. He bought this nice shelving set anyways as we are driving we passed several gated communities. I was shocked because I've never seen one before and I just don't understand the appeal. Those homes all lack soul and look the same. Looks like a big fancy prison. Made me feel uncomfortable honestly. Just feels hostile.

In alot of those communities it is as much if not more so about optics. It is like the most elite restaurants. People go there to be seen by the "right" people" not because the food is great.

And to be blunt in alot of these communities the walls are deliberate and they want to keep the peasants out.
@PicturesOfABetterTomorrow It's mostly old people in there (55+) and they don't want riff-raff (peasants) knocking them over and stealing their stuff. Kind of like an apartment without shared walls or floors.
