3... first dog was a black lab. my parents had it before i was born. but soon after they brought me home he would show his teeth and growl at me. they had to give him away. had 2 german shepherds in my teenage years. but now i am a cat dad.
@beermeplease Labs are normally kid friendly breeds, the one your parents had must have been an anomoly.

@NativePortlander1970 it had no problem with my brother who would have been 3-1/2 but i guess since i was getting all the attention he didn't like it. my parents and brother absolutely loved that dog but couldn't take any chances
@beermeplease Strange

@NativePortlander1970 it is...now that i think of it i believe my parents got that dog from a professional dog handler. it may have been trained as a guard dog. i'll have to ask my brother if he remembers. but a few years ago he adopted an adult chocolate lab and that dog loved everybody. he was a really good dog.
@beermeplease Even stranger, labs do not normally have the temperment to be guard dogs, unless that was the handler's motive, to completely psyop a burgler.

@NativePortlander1970 i was thinking the same. but maybe it was a lab mix. then only way of fully knowing is if my brother remembers or remembers having conversations with my parents over the years. both of my shepherds were good, loyal family dogs too, but my dad was the ultimate handler in that they would listen to him before us. not to say they wouldn't listen to us if dad wasn't around. but i remember when my brother and i got into physical fights our dog would go nuts...it didn't know who to protect. she would bark and show her teeth to both of us as if she was saying "stop it" ...i've posted this pic before...my first shepherd
