Al fresco dining

Two of my best memories of the 40s:

1. Sitting on the ground in a patch of ripe tomatos with a salt shaker.

2. Sitting on the ground under a tree of sweet ripe peaches with a knife for removing bad spots.

I only go back to the 1950's, but I remember that in our backyard in the Bronx, my grandfather had two large garden plots, which included a peach tree and two fig trees.

@DrWatson It's hard for me to picure trees in the Bronx

@Nelladell I know. But in the Italian-immigrant section I was born into, many people had large gardens. The front of our house faced concrete, but if you walked out the back door you came to a small patio, and a path that led between two garden plots. The peach tree was large and overhung the patio. The fig trees were smaller.And of course, there were lots of tomatoes and peppers growing as well! Probably zucchini and other things, but I was young and don't really remember all the details.

@DrWatson my grandfather grew grapes in Brooklyn and MN ad we there own wine. The play couldn't have been even more that 100 ft2, I will never forget the odor of fermenting wine in their basement b

@samueltyler2 My grandfather had a wine press and wooden barrels in the cellar. I have fond memories of that grape smell.

@samueltyler2 @DrWatson Hubby used to make wine, but didn't grow his own grapes. We lived in grape growing country at that time, and he bought them by the bushel.

@Nelladell My grandfather did not grow his own. I remember cartons and cartons of grapes arriving at the house from time to time. I am guessing that they came from the small fruit and vegetable markets a few blocks away.

@DrWatson Ah! Makes sense.

@DrWatson I worked at Jacobi Hospital in the late 60s and we went there. The Italian neighborhood on Arthur Street is still vibrant b

@samueltyler2 That is great to hear! We (my grandparents, parents, my sister and I) lived in a house on Arthur Avenue, not far from Tremont Avenue. I have been back to visit the area a couple of times, but not recently.

@DrWatson It is not far from the Botanical Gardens and Zoo, so we make a day of it.
DrWatson · 70-79, M
@samueltyler2 My parents and I used to go for picnics at the Botanical Gardens.
