There is no Self

This is a quote that I've read a couple of times in different sources/books. I believe Lao Tzu originated this quote but I'll recheck. It's a thought provoking idea to say the least.

How or in what ways might it be true?

@GoFish i think it could definitely be true. We all are really one consciousness, as Eckhart Tolle puts it, we are the Earth awakening, it's eyes. And what is my self , but my likes, thoughts or dislikes.... Is that who I am? These are just some thoughts I've considered.
