Does it bother you when people speak broken English? Just curious.

@11knaves11 So did I as my Grand mother spoke only Lithuanian and I learned it well enough to understand her and others in that neighborhood along with Serbians, Polish, Irish and some Latvians. But I went to a very good private schools and found that children who also had foreign born parents learned to speak English perfectly. I understand people not able to speak our language well when they first arrive but if they want to become citizens then they damn well go to classes and quickly learn to speak our language fluently. I have no mercy on those that do not.

I worked at a university for 25 years. It’s kind of surprising at how when you work long enough with others who speak in broken English you can train yourself to understand them a lot better. My attitude was that I only spoke one language and here they are communicating the best they can in another language when they need to and that’s a lot more than I can say for myself.

@cherokeepatti I was an instructor at our state college in the Engineering Dept. I witnessed how other instructors did with their students when they could not speak English fluently. The kids suffered and went to myself and others for help trying to understand the courses. In an education field teachers must be able to communicate well if students are to do well. Colleges hire based on DEI and how cheap they can get instructors at the cost of students ability to grasp material taught. Your thoughts on this are not very well thought out nor does it appear you are not looking at the people (students) who are paying for a quality education. Maybe you did okay with these people after 25 years but students do not have the benefit of wasting time per a semester time period to understand instructors who cannot communicate.
